Welcome to Year 1

In Year 1, the children will now be following  the newly created exciting  Key Stage 1 curriculum. We will gradually move from the 'Early-years' approach to learning to a more subject-focused timetable. They will have the opportunity to further develop their skills through play and exploration in small groups and whole class activities.

What Do We Get Up to in Year 1

W/b 9.9.19.This week the children have enjoyed role play in the 'Super hero headquarters' and imaginative play with the  'Super hero world' characters.

If this sounds as though the week has been all playing, you'd be wrong. They have been writing verbs and adjectives to describe super heroes and, as well as lots of counting, recognising and writing numbers, they have been 'counting on from a given number' in a variety of ways. They have also created paper plate self portraits and have learnt the names for different parts of the body.

W/b16.9.19. Children have been introduced to the concept of "text-mapping" as a tool to help them compose sentences. In Maths we have been learning how to find one more and one less than a given number. In RE we have been reading the story of Noah's Ark and making lovely animal masks....snakes have been very popular.

W/B 23.9.19. Children have enjoyed "text mapping" their sentences about their super heros and have written some fabulous sentences to describe their super powers. In Maths we have been learning the concept of greater than and less than using mathematical symbols. In RE we have been reading the story of Joseph and listened to extracts from the London Stage show before creating our own dream jars.

W/b 30.9.19. The children have continued to enjoy "text mapping" their sentences about how their superhero moves and their gadgets and have written some amazing sentences. In Maths we have been learning the concept of ordering numbers and enjoyed using a recipe to jam sandwiches as we learned about ordinal numbers. In Forest school this week we used our 5 senses and made our own special potions...…..ask your children about their potion.

W/b 7.10.19. The children have continued their superhero theme  using our" text mapping " approach to write about their superhero's side kick. Lots of amazing sentences and some fantastic adjectives and adverbs to describe their super powers-well done. In Maths we have been learning about addition. We have been learning and showing with cubes how many different  ways can you make a certain number, within 10.  In Forest school this week they made some superb clay tree monster models using leaves, sticks and berries they found in school. We will have their photos on display at Parents Evening this week.

W/B 14.10.19. The children have continued their superhero theme and have enjoyed writing their invitations for our superhero parade. We hope that you will be able to join us on the 24th October at 2.40pm. In Maths we have been continuing our learning about addition. In Forest school this week the children have put their knot tying skills to the test by creating a leaf garland. They also created conker necklaces showing great resilience and perseverance with drilling holes in the "wobbly" conkers.

W/B 21.10.19. The children have finished their superhero theme with drawing and writing their own comic strip stories about their superheroes. In Maths we have been continuing our learning about addition and adding numbers up to 10. They have had a fantastic week at Forest school as they read the story of "Super worm",  made a wormery, did some mud and blackberry painting and made their own worms using elder wood. Enjoy your half -term break.

W/B 4.11.19. We welcomed the children back with a WOW start morning all about fireworks. We watched some firework displays and discussed the noises, colours and onomatopoeia words that we could use to describe our fireworks. We went out into the playground with our scarves and used them like fireworks before coming in and painting our beautiful fireworks. On Tuesday we wrote fantastic onomatopoeia words to describe our fireworks and later this week we will start to text map our fire work poem. In Maths we have been learning the different ways that we can make 10 using our fingers and 10 frames. In RE we have been learning about Remembrance and the importance of the 11th November. In Forest school we have been looking at the changes in our environment-Autumn, animals and hibernation. We looked at the variety of leaves that have fallen, their colour, shape and size before using them to make a firework picture and sewing a pattern on a leaf.

W/B 11.11.19. The children have finished their firework poems which are fantastic. In Maths we are continuing our  learning about addition and adding numbers up to 10. We have been learning how to count on, remembering to hold the larger number in our heads. We had a beautiful remembrance service and then in class we stopped for 1 minute at 1100hrs and then listened to the "Last post". In Forest school this week continued to discuss Autumn and what hibernation means. We talked about hedgehogs, bats and dormice. We made dormice by whittling the end of a piece of Hazel with a knife then cutting it off the large stick with a saw. Using pens and wool they added the eyes, ears and tail. They also made leaf hedgehogs and leaf rubbings. The children showed great resilience and perseverance in this task.

They have used fabulous vocabulary to describe some of the many aspects of these important roles...ask your children about their fact file. In Maths we have been continuing our learning about addition through counting on. We have been remembering to hold the larger number in our heads and jump the correct number of jumps along the numberline. In PSE this week, we talked about and watched the "NSPCC PANTS" awareness programme. We listened to the song by Pantosuarus that tells us how to keeping ourselves safe and the importance of always telling a trusted adult if you are being asked to keep secrets or if someone is not respecting you or your body .
