Safeguarding at Sandfield

Safeguarding pupils is paramount and is the basis for all policy and practice. The school staff are trained to support children’s development and follow the government guidelines on child protection. This includes the  well-being of the pupils and staff at Sandfield.   The grounds are secure throughout the school day and only accessible by an electronic gate that is monitored by staff and CCTV.   Deliveries and visitors must announce their arrival and no vehicles are permitted access to the school grounds.

All staff, visitors and regular volunteers are subject to child protection checks with the police and local authority (Disclosure Barring Service - DBS).  Please can we ask parents who complete a DBS to help in school to sign up for the checking service which is available for up to 30 days once the DBS has been finalised.  This means that you do not have to keep reapplying for a DBS if you have a period of inactivity and will also enable the DBS to be used at other organisations.

Safeguarding Pupils
The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. This means that we have a Child Protection Policy. All staff (including supply staff, volunteers and Governors) must ensure that they are aware of these procedures. Parents and Carers are welcome to request a copy of the policy at any time.
There are times when we may need to share information and work in partnership with other agencies when there are concerns about a child's welfare. We will ensure that our concerns about our pupils are discussed with his/ her parents or carers first, unless we have reason to believe that such a move would be contrary to the child's welfare.

Our Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) is:                       Mrs Kate Collins, Headteacher

Our Designated Deputy Safeguarding Lead (DDSL) are:  Mrs Lucy Lidstrom, Home School Link Worker and Miss Claire McIllroy Deputy Headteacher (in training)

Key Child Protection Policy Compliance Statements:

  1. We listen to each child’s concern/ account without judgement.
  2. We record any observations/ child’s account on a school record of concern (ask Senior Leaders for a copy), stating only the facts. This must be passed to the Headteacher immediately.
  3. We do not discuss any disclosures/ observations with anyone except the Senior Leaders or the Headteacher.
  1. We never promise to keep information secret or offer an opinion, or try to extract information through further questioning.

If you are visiting the class please sign in at the office.  You will be given information on guidelines and practice and asked to wear a visitor’s badge. If you are assisting on a trip please complete a next of kin emergency form.

If you are concerned about a child's welfare, please record your concern and any observations or conversations heard and report it to the DSL as soon as possible the same day. Do NOT conduct your own investigation.

If your concerns relate to the actions or behaviour of a member of staff (which could suggest that he/ she is unsuitable to work with children), then you should report this to the Headteacher in confidence, who will manage the matter according to policy guidelines. If it concerns the Headteacher or the Deputy Headteacher, report it to the Chair of Governors, who will then manage the matter according to policy guidelines.
